DOWNLOAD: DECLARATION - TEACHER DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT
THE BACKGROUND TO THE TEACHER DEVELOPMENT SUMMITThe overall aim of the Teacher Development Summit is to facilitate effective system-wide teacher development that will lead to sustainable improvement in the quality of teaching and learning in classrooms and schools. The outcome of the summit will be a declaration that contains a set of recommendations regarding and commitments to a national plan for teacher education and development.
YOUR COMMENTS ON YOUR EXPERIENCE OF TEACHER DEVELOPMENTYour experience of teacher development initiatives is important to understand. In preparation for the Summit, we are posing two key questions for education stakeholders, including teachers. The questions are available on this website, where you can submit your responses electronically. The questions will also be distributed by stakeholders such as departments of education, unions and higher education institutions. A summary of stakeholder responses will inform the Summit deliberations.
SELECTED COMMENTS OF STAKEHOLDERSClick here to find out what other stakeholders are saying about the state of teacher development. Not all comments are available, but we have selected some that are typical of the responses that are being submitted to give you an indication of the major concerns as they emerge.
A CONCEPT PAPER TO SUPPORT THE SUMMIT DELIBERATIONSIn preparation for the Summit, the Summit Steering Committee has commissioned a series of discussion papers that will form the basis for a Summit Concept Paper. Click here to access the conceptual framework that guides this process, and the various papers as they are finalised.
SUMMIT STAKEHOLDERSThe Teacher Development Summit must add value to the current contributions of many stakeholders and roleplayers. The key groupings of actors in teacher development are educators, employers, educators’ unions and providers of teacher development. Each grouping is currently making invaluable contributions to improving the quality of education. A key purpose of the Summit is to ensure that their initiatives are undertaken within a coherent framework, following a consensus-based approach to enhancing efficiency in the design and delivery of teacher development. Perfecting the art of teaching" ... a seed planted in soil untainted,
can flourish beyond the contours of anticipated greatness.
Wisdom is not the mocking remnants of old age,
projected on the growing strands of youthful naivety.
Wisdom shines through voices of teachers,
echoes that fill the days of knowledge captured as it is lived.
From the seed of knowledge planted by a voice so akin to this of a parent,
the teacher's voice is the guiding light that opens the way to knowledge,
to experience, to wisdom, to richness.
The teacher's voice, the all-encompassing strand of wisdom,
watered by life experience.
And nourishing the very soil that gives life to the seed of knowledge and wisdom,
... is perfecting the art of teaching."
